Art & Design in NHS Healthcare: New Ward Environment Design
A Cottage Garden: Digital illustration and Health Environment Design
Plants and their uses are an important part of human history, medicine and recovery and in the past, botanical illustrations were used by physicians, pharmacists and gardeners for identification and analysis. Using these historical influences and original scientific illustrations as inspiration, designers’ at Sable&Hawkes set out to create a contemporary design for a new ward environment at CUH NHS Trust, reflecting the flora of a traditional cottage garden.
Working with CUH Arts – Cambridge University Hospitals’ arts-in-health programme and Cambridge University Botanic Garden, Sable&Hawkes and writer Hannah Jane Walker researched the flora, history and folklore of a typical English cottage garden to record them in digital illustration and poetry for a new ward environment design at Addenbrookes hospital.
Creative designers, art directors and illustrators in our own right, we can combine this with over 20yrs technical experience working with NHS development and arts teams, project managing all aspects of the brief, production and installation of these NHS environment projects.
In all 20 individual flower illustrations were created – one each for the new 20-bed ward – and over 60m of vinyl graphics were then designed into the ward environment.
