Sable&Hawkes appointed to rebrand Publishers’ Licensing Services

After winning a competitive creative tender, Sable&Hawkes have been appointed to deliver brand strategy, positioning, a new visual identity and suite of on- and off-line marketing materials for Publishers’ Licensing Services.
Publishers’ Licensing Services (PLS) has provided rights and licensing services to the publishing industry since 1981. Owned and directed by the four main UK publishing trade associations, their primary role is to maximise the value of published content, enable legitimate re-use, and protect copyright through effective secondary licensing, permissions and rights management services. Since 1981 PLS have distributed more than half a billion pounds to publishers, in 2023-2024, £44 million to over 4,500 publishers.

Adrian Kimpton of Sable said: “We are delighted to have been chosen by PLS for this prestigious project. In their role as copyright and licensing advisor, custodian, promoter and policy lead they are the pre-eminent experts in all matters of copyright for the UK publishing industry. The creative challenge for us will be to communicate that position in a clear, distinctive and relevant manner to a wide ranging cohort of stakeholders.”

The project will include:


  • stakeholder consultation and insight analysis
  • brand strategy , proposition, and positioning
  • logo and visual identity development and guidelines
  • graphic design and production of suite of marketing materials
  • content production for digital and social campaigns.
