Sable&Hawkes: Brand Sense. Design isn’t decoration – it’s decision-making.

Design often gets talked about as if it sits at the end of a process. The strategy is set. The decisions are made. The content is written.

Then someone says:
“Great – now what will it look like?”

But good design doesn’t start there. Done properly, design is not decoration applied to finished thinking. It is part of the thinking. It helps shape the message, the media, the structure and the way people move through an idea.

That’s why, for us, good design starts with the objective, the audience and what success actually looks like.

Good design companies design well.
The best think well.

For most clients, the real question is not simply:
What will this campaign, deck, report or exhibition look like, it’s:

  • is this the right message?
  • is this the right medium?
  • is this the right way to reach the audience?
  • what else needs to support it?
  • and how will we know if it has worked?

Those are not decorative questions. They are communications questions. And good designers should be part of the team answering them. That’s why design needs to be involved earlier than many people think: sitting down with clients, understanding their plans, their audiences, their pressures and what they’re trying to achieve.

Only then can design really do its job – not just making something look better, but helping it communicate more clearly and work more effectively.

For us, that’s the difference between styling and design. One is applied at the end.
The other helps shape the outcome from the start.

Do good work. Be good people.

If this way of thinking about design feels familiar, I’d be very happy to talk.
